Bournville Amnesty

Bournville Amnesty International Group was founded in 1962 in the Bournville suburb of Birmingham and has campaigned for many individual victims of human rights abuses around the world. We also campaign on more general issues such as disappearances, the death penalty, refugees and arms exports. We work on behalf of our adopted prisoner of conscience, Nurhamat Yusup, a young man in the Xinjiang Province in Western China.

We are a large and active group and work on human rights issues from a number of angles and draw our membership from greater Birmingham and beyond. We write letters to governments in countries where Amnesty has received news of human rights abuses. This pressure ensures that governments know that their actions are seen in the wider world, and protects people persecuted for their beliefs.

Coming up soon are events like book stalls, sleep ins, letter writing campaigns and even the odd meeting. Visit the page for future activities and then join in! You can see pictures of Bournville Group and other groups from Birmingham and beyond during a day event to raise awareness of human rights in China by clicking on this link.

Meetings are held monthly, at which we organise future campaign and fundraising activities. Speakers on a variety of human rights related topics are invited to meetings so that we can expand our knowledge and keep up with the changes and developments in this field.

We always welcome new members, whether they are able to attend meetings or not. People are needed to coordinate our work on specific campaigns (such as Amnesty's ongoing work on torture, arms control or the death penalty, for example). We have an email edition of our newsletter as well as a printed one which we send out by post. The group is supported by several individuals who cannot attend meetings but are able to contribute in other ways.
